Effects of democratic civic education on the development of
students' citizenship
- focusing on high school practice cases
Lee, Ho Geon
Sanbon High School
The purpose of this study is to find the direction of how the democratic
civic education process can be organized to develop students' qualities and
attitudes as democratic citizens as the school has changed to emphasize
the contents of democratic civic education and school autonomy. In
order to achieve this research objective, three examples of democratic
civic education activities conducted by the researcher's school were
analyzed and the results were as follows: First, the process of analyzing
dilemma situations or conflicts that are difficult to reach an agreement
and identifying and internalizing conflicting values inherent in them can
foster students' democratic citizenship. In other words, by having a socially
acceptable attitude toward social issues, it can provide an opportunity to
develop democratic citizenship through value disputes. Second, it helps
students develop their qualifications and attitudes as democratic citizens
when organizing a democratic civic curriculum centered on solving
problems through presenting project-type tasks. These results suggest that
democratic civic education should create a curriculum and school culture
that can experience political efficacy, and provide emotional and cultural
support for student-led autonomous activities, as well as policy and
institutional support.
Key words: democratic civic education, democratic citizenship,
student autonomy, dilemma argument class, social participation
