Discussions on the necessity and orientation of liberal art education in
universities have been ongoing. However, most of these discussions
have been based on Western philosophy and educational theory since
modern times. In this study, I tried to link our traditional culture "Pungnyu"
with liberal art education in university, and analyzed the case of the
¡®The World We Meet with Traditional Music¡¯ class at Humanitas College
of Kyung Hee University in that way. The results of analyzing the tasks
of three semesters from the second semester of 2020 to the first
semester of 2021 and interpreting them in connection with the "Pungnyu
Culture", suggest as follows:First, it is desirable to develop the ability of
students to find the essence of art and recreate it in their own way rather
than unilateral knowledge transfer in liberal art education, and strengthening
the ability of professors to lead this process is essential. Second, liberal art
education in universuty should not be about nurturing high-end appreciators or
cultured people, but it should reach the level of fostering world citizens,
"Pungnyu Human", who can reason and solve all problems in politics, economy,
and society through art methods.Third, it is necessary to exchange and integrate
with each other, such as a group of art subjects, such as a variety of art genres.
Fourth, the previous relative evaluation method is inconsistent with what the arts
are aiming for, requiring a shift to P/F evaluation or absolute evaluation. Fifth,
the "Pungnyu Culture", which recognizes the world through the arts and looks back
on itself, shows a desirable combination of life and art. In order to restore the
"Pungnyu Culture", it is necessary to designate the compulsory required
completion of the liberal art education curriculum at the university.
