유럽의 아메리카 대륙 탐험과 서양근대지성사
교양과목으로서의 세계사 강의에서 근대 유럽 부분은 매우 중요한 의미를 가진다. 오늘날 우리가 경험하고 있는 현대 세계가 만들어지는 출발점이 근대 유럽이기 때문이다. 서구중심주의를 반대하는 사람들은 근대 유럽을 강조하는 세계사 강의에 대해서 많은 비판을 제기하기도 한다. 그렇지만 민주주의, 자본주의, 개인주의 등 현재 세계를 구성하는 주요 요소들이 근대 유럽에서 생겨나고 확장되었다는 역사적 사실을 부정할 수는 없다.
문제는 근대 유럽에서 발생한 이전 시대와의 단절과 변화가 어떻게 가능했는가일 것이다. 대부분의 세계사 개설서들은 이러한 단절과 변화를 자생적인 것으로 설명하고 있다. 유럽사회의 발전과 함께 등장하는 혁명적인 사상가들과 혁신자들이 새로운 세계를 구상하고 지난한 노력을 통해 현실로 구현했다고 이야기한다. 그렇지만 왜 그러한 변화가 하필 16세기 이후에 등장하는지, 이전까지 없었던 변화가 특정 시기에 한꺼번에 쏟아져 나오는지에 대해서는 구체적인 설명이 부재하다.
이 글은 유럽인들의 세계 인식에 새로운 지평을 연 획기적인 사건으로서 아메리카 대륙의 탐험을 살펴보고자 한다. 아메리카 대륙은 유럽인들에게 이제껏 생각하지 못했던 새로운 세계가 존재하고 있다는 사실을 알려주었으며, 유럽인들의 머릿속에 중세적 상상력을 넘어서 전혀 다른 사회를 꿈꿀 수 있는 인식의 공간을 만들어 주었다. 이러한 새로운 인식의 공간은 새로운 시대를 여는 출발점이 되었다.

The European Exploration of the Americas and the Modern Western Thought
The aim of this paper is to examine the relation between european exploration of the Americas and evolution of modern western thought. On Oct 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived in america. His objective was to sail west until he reached Asia (the Indies) where the riches of gold, pearls and spice awaited. His exploration of the Americas is the historical event, because the ‘discovery’ of the Americas allowed the europeans to imagine ‘new world’.
In the 17th century, However, the Americas were used as a means for a proof of the superiority of European civilization. The frame of a barbaric America and a civilized European began to emerge throughout Europe. It was the social contracts of Hobbes and Locke that spread this composition.
The composition of civilization and barbarism is combined with the concept of progress of the Enlightenment in the 18th century. It created the idea of phases of the world's history, and the idea evolve into the philosophy of history developed by Voltaire, Kant and Hegel. At this time, the Americas are reduced to one of many primitive regions, including Africa and Asia.
