고전교육, 어디서 뚫리고 있을까
- 읽는다고 알아지는 것은 아니다

고전교육은 어떤 지점에서 장애에 직면하고 있는지를 검토할 필요가 있다. 고전이라는 책을 선정해서 읽도록 만들면 고전교육이 완성되는 것은 아니기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니라 무엇을 고전으로 규정할 수 있는가의 문제도 다시 살펴봐야 할 것이다. 고전의 명단은 이미 우리에게 주어진 기성물이기도 하기 때문이며, 그 적절성 여부나 포함되지 못한 저작들에 대한 고민도 필요하다. 그러나 무엇보다도 중요한 것은 고전을 읽어내는 능력이다. 그 능력은 단지 고전으로 선택된 책을 읽는 것으로 이루어지지 못한다. 그 어떤 저작도 당대의 대화와 의식이 기록되어 있으며 그로써 생겨난 문제의식과의 정신적 전투의 산물이기 때문이다. 이 논문은 그러한 관점에서 몇 가지 예를 통해 고전의 맥락과 접근에 대한 제안을 시도했다. 이와 함께, 고전을 읽는 행위가 현실과 마주하는 읽기로 전환되어야 한다. 그럴 때에 비로소 문제의식이 생겨나고 이 문제의식이 고전 안에 담긴 문제의식과 만나 해법 모색의 사유를 가져올 수 있기 때문이다.

How to rethink the method of Classics education

First of all, we need to know what kind of problems we experience regarding the classics education in college. Simple reading so-called classics could not achieve the meaningful goal of classics education. Also, we need to reconsider the list of classics. It could be a very controversial discussion how to reshape the list of classic books of lasting values for liberal art eduction. The most important issue is how to improve the reading intelligence or reading competence. My suggestion and proposal in this thesis is to clarify the historical context of the classics, which were the outcome of conscious battles with the reality in its own times. This will enable us to read the classics in order to pursue the answer or solution to the our own problems we are encountered in our real life.
