The influence of Plato¡¯s philosophy on the establishment of Euclidean geometric space

This paper tries to comprehend the influence of Plato¡¯s philosophy on the establishment of Euclidean geometric space on the basis of conceptional history. To accomplish this purpose, I tried to reveal how the prototype of space concept develop by investigating the pre-Euclidean space concept in ancient Greek philosophy. After that, I investigated the attempts which approached the chora-problem on the side of hyle, extension and medium. And I proved that the proper understanding of chora is medium. On the other hand, I declared that Plato¡¯s chora is the coexistence of geometric space and physical space. In relation to this, I tried to hint that Euclidean space is influenced by the abstractive aspect of space in the philosophy of Plato. Afterward, the study on the Euclidean space will bear abundant results by media of Proclus, on the scrutiny of concrete data.

Key Words: space. Euclid, Plato, Proclus, geometry
