The Foundation of Geometrical Natural Philosophy in Aristotle
: Focusing on the definition of movement
You Jae Min
Catholic Kwandong University
The view of modern people looking at Aristotle can be summarized in the following sentence. ¡°Aristotelian science presupposes a ¡®teleology-based worldview¡¯, which has prevented the emergence of a mechanistic worldview based on mathematics since modern times.¡± There are two misunderstandings of modern people. First, Aristotle's science is "teleological" and second, his science is "anti-mathematic". The purpose of this study is to eliminate unnecessary misunderstandings that have been added to Aristotle in the realm of science. This study explores the possibility of establishing a "geometrical natural philosophy" that does not presuppose "teleology" to Aristotle through the analysis of his "definition of movement" and argues that his natural philosophy has some methodical tools of the mechanical world interpretation of modern science.
