A Study on the acceptance of Medical Terms in East Asia
Kwon O Hui
Kyung Hee University
This paper examines the acceptance of medical terms in East Asia, focusing on the process of publishing anatomy books in modern Korea and Japan. In the modern Korea, the translation of anatomy into Hangul was centered on Jejungwon. Starting with ¡ºyag-mul-hag(sang-gwon)mu-gi-jil¡»(¡ºPharmacy(volume one)minerals¡») in 1905, the first Korean anatomy textbook ¡ºhae-bu-hag¡»( ¡ºAnatomy¡») was translated in 1906. and until 1910, about 30 kinds of medical textbooks were translated into Korean. Japan began to access Western medicine in the 17th century, leaving records of dissection from the 18th century, and published its first translation of anatomy, ¡ºhae-che-sin-seo¡»( ¡ºA new anatomical book¡») in 1774. The ¡ºhae-che-sin-seo¡» has translated a lot of Western medical terms, and what has not been translated or has been misinterpreted here has been confirmed and corrected through the ¡ºjung-jeong-hae-che-sin-seo¡»(1826) and ¡ºhwa-lan-nae-gyeong-ui-beom-je-gang¡»(1808). In order to comprehensively examine the acceptance of medical terms in Korea, it is necessary to organize a list of the terms before and after the introduction of Western medicine by the scholars, and to study the terms of the translation medicine book published by Jejungwon, and to compare with the original medical book of Japan.
