고전읽기의 즐거움?
: 누구를 위한 고전교육인가

지금 우리 사회와 대학에서는 고전읽기를 권하고 있다. 하지만 대학이 고전교육에 대해 관심을 갖는 이유는 잘 이해되지 않는다. 본 글은 지금 대학의 고전교육이 누구를 위한 것인지를 묻고, 고전교육의 방향과 방법이 어떠해야 하는지를 논의한다. 현재 많은 대학의 고전교육 프로그램은 정부의 재정 지원 사업을 통해서 만들어진 것이다. 따라서 대부분의 대학에서 고전교육은 구색을 갖춰 있기만 하거나, 있다고 결과 보고 할 수 있기만 하면 되는 것이다. 이러한 배경 아래서 고전교육은 지금 보다 더 나아질 수 있는 가능성을 차단당한다. 이와 같은 현실을 뛰어 넘기 위해서는 처음으로 돌아가 대학에서 고전교육이 필요하가를 묻고 대답하는 과정과 그 답을 실천하기 위한 노력이 필요하다. 또한 우리를 위한 고전교육, 즐거운 고전읽기에 대한 강한 희망과 구체적인 상상도 필요하다.

Our society and universities are encouraging classical reading. But the reason why universities are interested in classical education is not well understood. This article asks who the classical education of the university is for now, and discusses the direction and method of classical education. Many universities classical education programs are currently being made through government funded projects. Therefore, in most universities, classical education is only a result to be reported. In this situation, classical education is blocked from the possibility of being better than now. In order to overcome this reality, it is necessary to go back to the beginning and ask the question about the need for classical education in university. It is also necessary to make efforts to realize the answer. In addition, it is necessary to hope and imagine a classical education for us and enjoyable classical reading.
