교육의 종말과 고전 ‘교육’
-연세대 Great Books & Debate 교과목 사례를 중심으로

이 글은 연세대학교 Great Books & Debate 교과목 개발 목적과 수업 사례를 소개한 것이다. 대학 교양 교육에서 고전 읽기는 중요하다. 고전 읽기와 토론하기, 글쓰기를 결합한 세미나 식 교육 방식이 학생들의 성취를 높일 수 있다. 고전 교육은 학습 주체인 학생 개인의 목소리에 근원을 두고 섬세하게 대화적으로 이루어져야 한다. 우리는 고전 교육을 통해서 ‘나’와 텍스트 간의 대화를 다층적으로 이끌어 내는 해석능력, ‘나’의 문제를 찾아 스스로 분석하는 능력, ‘나’의 생각을 전체적으로 조망하는 능력을 배양할 수 있다. 이를 통해 책읽기가 나와 무관한 내용 요약 과정이나 주제 찾기 놀이가 아니라 ‘나’의 삶과 연결되어 있음을 깨닫게 한다.
학생들에게 자신의 목소리를 갖게 하여 사색가로서의 권위를 학생 내부에서 이끌어내는 것이 고전교육에서 중요하다. 읽기와 토론, 글쓰기를 결합한 Great Books & Debate 교과목은 학생 스스로가 학술공동체 속으로 소속감을 갖고 들어갈 수 있게 해준다. 토론과 글쓰기를 통해 학생들은 텍스트 읽기의 지적 경험을 자신의 고유한 문제와 시각으로 재해석한다. 이를 통해 학생들은 학술공동체에 참여하게 된다.

This article introduces the purpose of developing the Great Books & Debate curriculum at Yonsei University. Classical reading is important in liberal arts education. Seminar-style teaching combined with classical reading, discussion, and writing can enhance student achievement., and teaching methods should be small seminars. Classical education should be done delicately and interactively based on the student's voice as the learning subject. It is important in classical education for students to have their own voices and to derive the authority as a speculator from the students themselves. Through classical education, we can cultivate the ability of interpreting the dialogue between 'I' and text in a multi - layered way, the ability to analyze myself in search of 'I', and the ability to see the whole idea of 'I'. This makes it possible for the reader to realize that reading is related to the life of 'me' rather than the process of summarizing content or finding a topic.
Great Books & Debate Course, which combines reading, discussion, and writing, allows students to have a sense of belonging in an academic communication community. Through discussion and writing, students reinterpret the intellectual experience of reading text with their own problems and perspectives. This allows students to participate in the academic community.
