Proposals for the Development of Liberal Arts Education and Classics Education in College:
Focusing on the ¡°Great Books Seminar¡± at Dongguk University
Moon, kyoung Yeon
Dongguk University
The liberal arts education at Dharma College in Dongguk University is being conducted with the following objectives: to improve the understanding of human cultures, which is a fundamental requirement for the twenty-first century citizens and that goes beyond the scope of mere professional knowledge; and to cultivate the talents whose knowledge is not restricted by the boundaries of science and humanities, but is multi-disciplinary and amalgamated. This paper aims to examine the educational practices in the liberal arts education by focusing on the ¡°Great Books Seminar¡± lecture series offered at Dharma College in Dongguk University. By doing so, I would like to explore the methods in which the students can develop the convergent thinking and expand their abilities to communicate, namely, to participate in discussions. In particular, I engaged in a reflective examination of the process in which classics are being taught by focusing on the case of the Great Books Seminar on Culture and Art, the lecture series that I have been teaching thus far.
What characterizes the Great Book Seminar is that it is not a unilateral lecture taught by the professors who read the texts for the students, but aims toward a bilateral process in which professor and students can both participate and mutual exchanges occur among students through the discussions. Another defining characteristic of the Great Book Seminar is that there is an institution of Program Director (PD) professors. The PD professors who are in charge of each area of study administer each curriculum course, standardize the syllabus and teaching manual, and manage the courses according to the manual. This process guarantees the quality of the lectures and allows for the development of supplemented manual each semester which reflects the suggestions for improvement. By conducting a survey about and evaluating the classes of the Great Book Seminar that have continued to be taught for three years from 2014 to 2016, it could be confirmed that the Dongguk University students have the shared understanding in the necessity and benefits of reading classics.
However, there are still room for improvements: the discussion seminars based on team projects can be a burden to both students and lecturers; ways to improve students reading skills should be sought constantly; structure and organization to discuss, revise and complement the current reading list of one hundred great books should be established; diverse manners of discussion should be developed in Great Book Seminar taking into account the characteristics of each academic discipline.
Key words: classics education in the twenty-first century, Dharma College in Dongguk University, Great Book Seminar, convergent thinking, team project, discussion.
