A Suggestion on Classics Reading for University¡¯s General Education
Focusing on <Reading Classics of Great Literature>
Class in Pusan National University

Heo, Namyoung
Pusan National University

In this paper, I would like to suggest the direction of classical reading and the management of lectures in university¡¯s general education, focusing on the <Reading Classics of Great Literature> class taught at Pusan National University.
In general education at a universtiy level, classical reading focuses on cultivating talented people with convergence thinking, rather than professional intellectuals. Therefore, the class should be a model for raising creative and convergent thinking based on critical thinking, and should be a direction towards cultivating a consilience type of talent which allows students to think about an issue in depth and solve various problems. In this premise, Pusan National University intends to teach students how to reproduce and practice knowledge whilst critically reading the Classics according to social context through the <Classical Reading and Discussion> lecture. Specifically, the class aims to increase students' thinking ability and consensus education, and selects and reads various Classics that are fused with humanities and natural sciences. In this process, problems are suggested and debated.
This class model is about learning how to read a Classic. It is not to acquire the contents all at once, but to acquire the contents step by step. We divided the reading within the class into five seperate stages: Quiz, Reading, Discussion, Presentation, and Book Review, and clarified the role and nature of each stage so that each one converges to reading. This is the premise of the classical reading lesson and the class starts from reading and understanding the contents by oneself. The first stage,¡®Quiz¡¯, induces classical reading whilst the second stage,¡®Reading¡¯, plays a role in understanding the contents. During ¡®Presentation¡¯ and ¡®Discussion¡¯ the Classics are re-read. After re-reading, the students then raise questions and issues throughout ¡®Presentation¡¯, which are discussed and solved throughout the ¡®Discussion¡¯stage. Finally, ¡®Book Review¡¯ is a stage used to organize the issues previously raised. The students organize the content understood and discussed throughout the stages of ¡®Quiz¡¯, ¡®Reading¡¯,¡®Presentation¡¯ and ¡®Discussion¡¯. In classical reading, each stage of the class is a process of converging the Classics. Through classical reading class, such as the one previously discussed, we can improve students' thinking ability and cultivate problem solving techniques.

Key words: general education, ¡®Reading Classics of Great Literature¡¯, learning model, classical reading, discussion.
