‘고전 읽기’ 교육의 이론과 실제

본고는 경희대학교 자유이수교과목 중 하나인 <고전 읽기 : 황순원> 과목의 수업 사례를 통해 ‘고전 읽기’ 과목의 필요성을 확인하고 실제적 활용 방안을 제고하기 위한 목적으로 작성된다. 2010년대 이래로 ‘고전 읽기’ 교과목이 전국적인 대학에서 필수 혹은 선택 과목으로 운영되면서 대학생들의 인성 함양을 담당하는 교양 교과목의 일환으로 운용되고 있다. 본 논문은 2016년 2학기 서울캠퍼스에서 개설되었던 <고전읽기 : 황순원> 교과목의 운영 방안과 실제 수업을 토대로 ‘고전 읽기의 대상으로서의 황순원 문학’을 검토하면서 ‘자유이수’ 영역 하에 ‘고전 읽기’ 교과목의 필요성과 함께 구체적인 성과와 한계를 짚어보고자 한다.
황순원의 문학은 우리 시대의 고전이다. 황순원의 문학이 ‘고전 읽기의 대상’으로서 ‘모범성, 영원성, 보편성’ 등의 서사를 제공하며 인생과 세계를 성찰케 하는 텍스트에 해당하기 때문이다. 황순원의 문학은 고전이면서 동시에 현재진행형의 텍스트이다. 염결적 문체와 깨어 있는 작가 의식으로 생전뿐만 아니라 작고한 이후에도 끊임없는 모범으로 회자되는 황순원은 충분히 고전 읽기의 텍스트로 가능하고 필요하기 때문이다. 우리는 황순원이라는 고전을 통해 한국 문화의 원형과 세계 문화의 보편성을 전범적인 수준에서 만날 수 있는 것이다.

Teaching Classics, Its Theory and Practice
-Focusing on the Course of Hwang Sunwon’s Works

This essay aims to confirm the necessity of reading and enhancing the necessity of reading a classics course titled "Reading Classics Hwang Sunwon" in Kyung Hee University’s liberal education curriculum. Since the 'Reading Classics' curriculum has been operating as a compulsory or optional subject nationwide since 2010, it has been operated as part of the curriculum to cultivate the character of undergraduate students in college. This paper seeks to explore the need, accomplishments, and its limits, of the "classics" in the optional course category, reviewing the need for "classic literacy" and "Hwang Sunwon," based on the actual teaching experience. The literature of Hwang Sunwon is the classic of our time. His work reflects the themes of life and the world, including speculations on the themes of universality and eternity. Hwang Sunwon literature is both classical and contemporary. Since the author is remembered by his contextual sense of the world and thoroughly controlled, abstinent writing style, his works continue to be remembered as a classic. We can meet the time-honored model of traditional Korean culture and the universality of Korean culture through the classical works of Hwang Sunwon.
