The emergence of otaku/ingyeo/loser women:
the case of Megalia and Womad
Han Woo Ri
Chung-Ang University
This paper aims to explain Megalia and Womad ¡ª the new type of feminist movement based on online in South Korea since 2015 ¡ª in the youth generation discourse and the youth culture discourse. While the discourses of ¡®880000won generation¡¯, ¡®Sampo Generation¡¯ have depicted the irregular youth laborers or job seekers giving up courtship, marriage, and childbirth; the youth culture discourse focuses on how the so-called loser youths create alternative solidarity via internet subcultures. Certain types of self-destructive online joke, misogynic ¡®drip¡¯, and humor labeled as otaku, ingyeo, loser culture has been celebrated distinctively in that the ingyeo youths construct their unique cultural identity in this new media era. However, these youth discourses have focused mainly on the male youth without proper considerations of gender differences. This paper points out that controversial websites, Megalia(started from DC inside gallery) and Womad, should be examined as a part of internet subculture of Korean youth; and female youth as otaku women, ingyeo women, loser women who have not yet been noticed enough could be the key to understanding the new feminist movement burst upon Korean online including Megalia and Womad.
Keyword: feminism, mysogyny, ingyeo, loser, Megalia, Womad, online, subculture, the youth generation discourse.
