Global Citizens in the Age of Globalization

While the globalization as a world wide process of integration continues to prevail, the ¡°citizens¡± are perceived only to be mass consumers rather than politically conscious beings. In the midst of the hegemonic rule of the state power and the big capital, civil society is now incapable to articulate its social and historical identity with ethical values. Civil society becomes consistently vulnerable to the rule of political power or is practically excluded from the significant communities of decision making. The age of globalization seems to allow the citizens to live just as politically indifferent dwellers in the cities. Under these circumstances, we might to be encountered with not only crisis of democracy but also serious damage to our humane ability to cope with the problems of polarization and ecological challenges.
Therefore, we desperately need a new paradigm of global citizen education in higher education institutions. What could be the best way to realize our goal to secure the peace and life of humanity and the earth as a whole? Priority should be given to the world history education, by which students could be equipped with deeper understanding of global linkage of human life. Language education other than English as well as geographical studies and futurology are required to be essential parts of the education program for global citizens. College administrations also should be restructured to fit the goal we purpose in this thesis. Educating global citizens is one of the most valuable missions for entire human beings in order to solidify the fraternity among the people in the world for a better future.
