Humanistic Schizophrenia :
New Challenges in Liberal Arts Education
Lee, Gira
Kyung Hee University
This study, based on the results of questionnaire of Kyung Hee Future Report and my own experiences in classroom, aims at presenting divided self of the undergraduate students of Kyung Hee University and explains the cause of their divided self from the root of the problem: The dissociation between the contents of liberal arts education, which they received from Humanitas College and the reality that they are faced with in the society. As these students have clearer understanding of social and humanistic value via the liberal arts education from Humanitas College, the dissociation between the value and the inhumane reality, where infinite competition and boss-subordinate relationship dominate, strikes them even stronger. This divided self, which originated from failure of the students in overcoming the dissociation between the ideal value and reality, shall be called as 'humanistic schizophrenia.' We may say, on the one hand, that it is a positive result of liberal arts education of Humanitas College, but on the other hand, it is a challenge that we must cope with. Furthermore, it is not just an issue, which only an issue that the liberal arts education of Humanitas College is faced with. It is challenge that liberal arts education of all universities in Korea must deal with currently.
Key words: humanistic schizophrenia, liberal education, homo ethicus, homo politicus, moral subject.
