Where do universities advance fiercely on?

Oh, Chan Ho
Sogang University

The present university students are grown and raised to a ¡®full package¡¯ for competition. This does not mean that there never existed competition in the past but it does that the timing becomes earlier, the speed goes faster, and the level of it gets stronger than before. It does not result in so-called achievement. Cast into the endless and unlimited competition, university students keep listening to and internalizing the notion that ¡°Capitalism is unavoidable and there¡¯s nothing we can do about it.¡± As people art repearedly exposed to this myth or spell, people take capitalism as ¡®the scared and inviolable.¡¯ At this phase, people regard democracy, which is incomparable and unparalleled value, as unless under the frame of cost saving and profit increase. In proportion to this, the number of people who are discriminated against due to the economic bi-polarization given by the capitalism increases.
The problem lies here. Universities whose responsibilities to criticize these phenomena are, in fact, too loyal to the capital. Of course, universities are not ¡®the scared and inviolable¡¯ and can respond to social changes. However, universities do not need to follow the social changes without questioning, it is not necessary for them to keep pace with the society when the society itself becomes a business or a company. Universities take it for granted and concur to become a factory producing merchandises for companies.
There is only one value, ¡®Business¡¯, in the universities. Business-friendly paradigm attracted external capital and universities start to impose self-censorship to themselves. Some studies of which core value is criticism among Humanities and Social Sciences become of no use and the spirit of criticism is considered as something to refrain from because it will be harmful for students to get jobs in companies. Academic departments are re-arranged or even closed by the certain standards of the university and new value system has set in the universities. Debates in the thrown of business often confirm that ¡®human labor can be calculated into costs or numbers.¡¯ In the classrooms, headquarters, and meeting rooms of universities, it is more frequent to hear and confront the idea that ¡®human labor can be calculated into cost or numbers¡¯ and those places exist to confirm and jutify the notion. Here, the more they deliberate, the more they disregard for the disadvantaged. Still, responsibilities lie inside the universities. Under the dare and sole lead of capital and business, how studies, which could not find ways to solve their own risks, can appeal to ¡®insecure individuals who lead their lives under the capitalism¡¯?

Key words: competition, university, corporatization of the university, democracy, the humanities.
