The Application and Strategies of Extracurricular Bridge Programs
related to Liberal Arts Korean
-Focusing on Cases of Mokwon University

While the college communication education takes place in the basic liberal arts curriculum, it is mostly handled by the Korean language area. At this time, such Korean language education as the liberal arts education requirements should play a role as a tool for undergraduates' intellectual communication. It means that it would be necessary to provide education of practical, social, and respectful Korean language. Then, the liberal arts Korean should not be conducted simply based on a single textbook. Covering the general scopes, it should also support students with every major. Therefore, it is essential to reinforce the professionalism of the liberal arts Korean. For this, various bridge extracurricular programs should be vitalized, getting out of the existing education limited to class hours. This paper has introduced the <Discussion and Writing> course and the support of extracurricular programs in Mokwon University as a class model.
As an integrated-type curriculum covering reading, writing, speaking, and listening, the <Discussion and Writing> of the liberal arts education requirements is charged by the area of liberal arts Korean. For its internal stability, the discussion tutoring system, writing clinic, speaking clinic, and discussion contest are continuously applied in the connection with the course. Also, for the online-learning, such cyber campus, self-directed learning video, and online learning method are provided/applied to it. Such various on/offline extracurricular activities increase students' academic achievements and also their satisfaction with the course.
Students can be developed when they seek for various extracurricular activities and then complement what is lacking for themselves on the extension of the course. For this, it would be necessary to have permanent educational institutions that can provide feedbacks on Korean language anytime during the period of school attendance. Even though many colleges have consulting educational institutions related to writing, it is still rare to find educational institutions related to speaking. In this aspect, the case of Mokwon University leading the establishment/operation of its speaking clinic could become a leading model.
