The Meaning of Liberal Education in the Light of Gadamer¡¯s Hermeneutics

  H. G. Gadamer reminds us of the importance of humanistic truth or the value of artistic truth which cannot be reduced to the method-centrism in the modern West. He critiques that the tradition of natural sciences has been dominated by its monolingual structure, while he paid attention to the fact that humanities have their characteristics of dia-logue based upon inter-action. This interactional communication cannot be grasped by the rigorous methods of natural sciences. For this humanistic communicative truth requires the changeablity of the subject according to the dialogical partners and itss expandablility of the meaning horizon. This truth cannot but help being historical, hermeneutical and ever-incomplete. The general education or liberal eduction in Korea should be based upon Gadamer¡¯s communicative notion of truth by overcomming the information-implementing and score-based education which presume a hierarchical structure between teachers and students and by aiming at the maturation of both teacher and student through dialogical education.
