Humanistic History Education for Cultivating Democratic Citizens

Kim Min Chul
The Center for Historical Truth and Justice

This paper focuses on the pedagogical aspects of humanistic history education and the contribution of the Beutelsbacher Konsens to nurturing students as democratic citizens. Humanistic history education contributes to democracy in raising rational judgments, expanding the view of humans, and dealing with deliberations on the public good. Based on an educational philosophy that believes in students' autonomous judgment, Beutelsbacher Konsens has laid the foundation for German democratic education through the principle of prohibition of compulsion, the principle of reproducing controversy and the principle of relationship of interest. These principles are in line with the purpose of making the classroom a forum for democratic public debate. In order to realize this, the professor must act as an opponent, a moderator, and an incentive. As an application of humanist historical education theory, I tried to make students ¡®generating questions¡¯ about historical events. And also with Knowledge-based questions, questionable questions, hypothetical questions, I gave students the opportunity to practice democracy in their lives by understanding different worlds, different perceptions, and different ways of life.

Key Word: Humanistic history education, Beutelsbacher Konsens, Deliberative democracy, Generating questions, Democratic citizen.
