Human Sciences in a Posthuman Age: Interbreeding humans with technologies
Abstract
This paper attempts to experiment with posthuman
subjectivities to find ways of reassembling the human
sciences after the Pandemic, by examining hybrids
between humans and technologies. In Bruno Latour¡¯s
view, Modernity has led to what he refers to as the Great
Divide between humans and nonhumans or between
subjects and objects, which is exacerbated in times of
pandemic. In response, the paper examines three core
areas surrounding the human sciences, each of which
is related to Modernity in Western culture, in an attempt to
work towards a posthuman, post-pandemic human sciences.
The first area probes the concepts of humans and humanism,
which produce and exclude nonhumans in the human sciences
in the Modern Age. The second area relates to how we can
generate a posthuman subjectivity, by examining how humans
become technical beings in Bernard Stiegler¡¯s theory of technicity
and transform into actors in Bruno Latour¡¯s Actor-Network-Theory.
Finally, the third area seeks to conceive of and create zones of
interbreeding and proliferating hybrids between humans and
nonhumans, and between then human sciences and techno-sciences.
This in turn offers a method of co-existing with technologies and viruses,
offering a vision for a posthuman, post-pandemic future.
