The ecological significance of Hildegard von Bingen(1098-1179)

and the city Bingen of today.

Shim Eun Joo

Philipps Universität Marburg

Abstract

We explore the ecological message of Hildegard von Bingen(1098-1179) a medieval abbess, mystic, preacher and helper of the sick and focus on her creative spirit and how her ecological views, which have been influential for more than 900 years, are now gaining power in her town Bingen (Germany), and how her message is passed on.

We first look at her life and writings, and then examine her worldview of the world, especially with the focus on her visionary book ¡°das Buch vom Wirken Gottes¡±, and analyze the concept ¡°viriditas¡± that is central here.

Viriditas (Latin, literally "greenness," formerly translated as "viridity") is a word meaning vitality, fecundity, lushness, verdure, or growth. It is particularly associated with abbess Hildegard von Bingen, who used it to refer to or symbolize spiritual and physical health, often as a reflection of the Divine Word or as an aspect of the divine nature.

In this writing, the abbess makes the world shine before the reader's eyes as a work of art of God. Hildegard of Bingen shows the reader the relationship of the microcosm and macrocosm to the almighty Creator. The book shows the ten visions "Of the work of God" based on the origin, development and fate of the entire cosmos.

In this work, I pay particular attention to their essential keyword "viriditas" the following 3 points:

1. The relationship between viriditas and God,

 2. The relationship between viriditas and the human soul and body,

 3. The relationship between viriditas and nature

He then examined the places and institutions of the city of Hildegard of Bingen, and how Hildegard was being transmitted and taught in Bingen.

Finally, from Hildegard's ecological message, to those of us who live in the ecological crisis today.

Key Words : Hildegard of Binen, Viriditas, Ecological pioneer, Ecological Message, City Bingen
