Liberal Arts Education from Education to Learning
- Focused on the Case of Minerva School

Kim, Young Jin
SeoIl University

The wave of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is demanding change and innovation in our universities. It is time for the paradigm shift to be transformed into the simple knowledge transmission type education that Korean universities have pursued so far. Although it is not late, we must respond to the demands of the times in what is the value of our university and its role in the era of the infinite excess and infinite information. In order to respond to this call of the times, our university seeks to gain insights through the case of Minerva School, which is proposing future universities through change and innovation.
The Minerva School in the United States conducts competency centered education that fosters the ability to solve complex problems in real life, rather than studying the existing simple memorization method. Their teaching methods are moving away from simple knowledge transfer classes, allowing for immediate feedback on classroom instruction, discussion and debate, collaboration, and real life. To do this, the system is being organized so that the correlation between real-time learner can be checked in online class. In this system, the lessons of the instructor are conducted in small groups. This is based on the premise that knowledge exchanges between instructors and students can be fully realized online. The reason why Minerva School moves students from 7 cities to a cycling dormitory is that they can not do online as much as they are concerned about their constant learning, reflection, and human relationships. Minerva School offers a futuristic college to raise global talent through direct understanding of the field and participation in internship programs with experience gained by participating in projects that students can understand the culture of each country by overthrowing the existing method. In this context, admission does not involve recruiting students to a region that is truly global. Adhere to the principle of equality of opportunity so that all students regardless of nationality can apply.
In this regard, the Humanitas College has been leading the change of liberal arts education, and I want to contribute to the paradigm shift from education to learning by examining the case of Minerva School when the Humanitas College is about to take a leap forward. The Humanitas College is preparing to design a transition to liberal arts education by introducing presentation-discussion-writing to strengthen students' critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. This study examines the whole teaching and learning method through the case of Minerva School and suggests a concrete and experimentable alternative to the paradigm shift from the existing educator-centered teaching method to the learner-oriented.
