Cosmopolitan Education as Liberal Education: On Hannah Arendt¡¯s Lectures on Kant¡¯s Political Philosophy.

  In this so-called global age, any matter or issue an individual or a country faces cannot be dealt with as a personal or national matter. Given the global awareness that everything is entangled with everything, a personal problem will have consequences on others and a national issue often will turn out to be an international one. In such a world, any individual thinking and act can have swift impact upon others around us as well as other countries including neighbouring ones. Also, anyone can be influenced by surrounding human and nonhuman relations. This entangled condition of life witnesses the urgency of cosmopolitan education. In her Human Condition, Hannah Arendt pays her close attention to the plurality of human political acts (vita activa), following the Aristotelian understanding of human being as political animal. Then, in her Lectures on Kant¡¯s Political Philosophy, she examined the matter of the validation of political acts as well as political judgments with regard to the criterion of political act. She asks which political act is historically meaningful and right. Right here, she proposes the notion of cosmopolitan existence. The cosmopolitan existence can be described as a viewpoint to see one¡¯s present and history from the unfolding world history. This world historical perspective means one¡¯s impartial capacity to see historical events beyond subjective limitations. In this sense, Arendt¡¯s theory of political judgment in Lectures on Kant¡¯s Political Philosophy may point to one of the crucial purposes of cosmopolitan education as the core of liberal education in this global age.
