본 논문은 조선의 16세기를 살았던 퇴계(이황, 1501~1570)의 

교육철학을 재조명함으로써, 오늘날 교육현실의 다양한 문제를 

진단하고 미래 교육이 나아갈 방향에 어떤 시사점을 줄 수 있는지 

그 가능성을 모색한 것이다. 퇴계가 지향한 교육의 목적은 五倫에 

기초하는 인륜을 밝히는데 있으며, 또한 그 교육방법의 중심에는 

敬이 있다. ‘경’의 교육방법은 일상 속에서 용모․말씨․행동거지 등 

자신의 몸가짐을 바르게 하는 데서부터 시작된다. 이러한 몸 공부는

 그대로 마음을 하나로 집중하여 한 생각의 잡념도 없게 하는 마음공부로

 이어진다. 결국 마음이 분산되지 않고 집중됨으로써 현실 속에 일어나는

 온갖 일에 대처함에 조금도 잘못됨이 없게 된다. 이 과정에서 인욕을 

억제하고 천리를 보존함으로써 인간에게 본성으로 내재된 리의

 실현이 가능해진다.

21st century university education and Toegye's philosophy of education

Abstract

By re-examining the educational philosophy of 

Toegye(Lee Hwang, 1501-1570), who lived in the 16th 

century of Joseon, this paper diagnoses various problems

 in today's educational reality and seeks the possibility of 

giving implications to the direction of future education.

The purpose of Toegye's education is to reveal humanity

 based on Oryun, and there is also a Gyeong at the center

 of the educational method. The educational method of Gyeong 

begins with correcting one's posture, such as appearance,

 speech, and behavior in daily life. This body study leads to mind

 study, which focuses the mind as it is, so that there is no thought.

 Eventually, as the mind is concentrated without being dispersed,

 there is nothing wrong with dealing with all the things that happen

 in reality. In this process, by suppressing greed and preserving the 

heavens, it becomes possible to realize the Li inherent in human nature.
