Desirable Direction of Moral Education in Liberal Education

  Today, our college education is criticized as being away from its original purpose of producing a whole person who can build a broad culture and realize personal value. Education that is closely related to the purpose of this kind of holistic education is liberal education, and its proper center should be moral education. Unlike traditional character education, which has focused on the transfer of particular virtues and values, the moral education that is practicable and necessary in college liberal education should put the stress on the development of moral reasoning capacity. Such development of moral reasoning capacity should be done evenly in all of the following three areas: (1) individual ethics, (2) social ethics, and occupational ethics. Furthermore, the moral education associated with these three areas must be closely linked to one another, so it is desirable to have an interdisciplinary nature.
